(Lakeside, CA, August 3, 2021) After a near two-month summer break in the middle of the schedule, the Lucas Oil POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series returns to action this Saturday night at the Barona Speedway. Spectator gates will open at noon with racing at 5:00.
Heading into Saturday’s race, Lakeside teenager Grant Sexton, who is seeking his first ever Lightning Sprint Car championship, has a commanding 91-point lead over Sexton Gatlin Racing teammate David Bezio of San Diego. At the series' last race, Sexton and Bezio placed first and second at Barona on June 12th. Sexton went winless in the first four races of the season but has come on strong and has won the last three in a row.
Behind the lead duo, two first year drivers, Matt Sotomayor of Alpine and El Cajons Brayden Chiaramonte, are ranked second and third and fighting for the “Rookie of the Year” award. Sotomayor leads that battle by a mere 10-points going into the final five races of the 2021 campaign. Parker Dumas rounds out the top five in the championship standings.
In addition to Grant Sexton’s three wins, his father Brent, older brother Dalton, San Diego’s Dumas and James Turnbull of Indio have one victory each in the initial season of SWLS racing.
In addition to the SWLS, the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Sport Compacts, Pure Stocks, Dwarf Cars, 360 Sprint Cars, Mini Dwarfs and Jr. Sprints will be in action.
