Bishop Best of Class in Night One of Illinois SPEED Week

Belleville, IL – Andy Bishop etched his name in the POWRi record books by breaking through with the POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro League to take a career-first. Bishop’s career-first came during the opening night of the Sixth Annual POWRi Illinois SPEED Week at Belle-Clair Speedway.

Starting in the third position, Bishop immediately fell in behind early race leader Joe B. Miller. On lap nine, Miller’s engine let go causing the caution and allowed Bishop to take over the top position. As the laps wound down, Bishop held a healthy lead over second-place finisher Jason McDougal. Austin Schaeffer finished third, rounding out the podium. Nathan Benson took fourth with Harley Hollan in fifth.

“It feels great to finally have a car under me that’s consistent and I can feel comfortable every night I get in it,” said Andy Bishop. “Two years ago I got so close at Macon, but lost it on a restart. So, to close the deal here means a lot. It feels good to get a pretty good sized win here.”

“Coming into SPEED Week, we want to play it cautious and get some points,” commented Jason McDougal. “We started a little deep tonight and honestly, we were rolling on the bottom pretty good until the last yellow. The track was good. It’s definitely nice to start off SPEED Week with a solid run on the first night, but you have to be consistent.”

“The track today was gnarly,” stated Austin Schaeffer. “I feel like we ran the car and competition as hard as we could so to pick up that podium means a lot. It’s going to be a pretty long week.”
