Thorson Takes 1st Annual Camfield Memorial Victory

Thorson Takes 1st Annual Camfield Memorial Victory

Macon, IL – After coming up one spot short the night before, Tanner Thorson fought to a hard earned victory from his eighth place starting position to claim the first annual Rich Camfield Memorial at Macon Speedway with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series. Second place starter Justin Peck took command on the opening lap, leading the initial 14 circuits as Thorson fought through the field towards the front.

Almost halfway, Thorson had closed in on Peck and was in prime position to make a move and began throwing slide jobs for the lead. On lap 15, Thorson was able to make it stick off turn four, leaving Peck to deal with Spencer Bayston and the winner of the previous night, Zach Daum. As the laps wound down, Thorson found himself heavily in lap traffic, quickly picking off car after car to keep Bayston behind him.

By the time the checkered flag dropped, Thorson had placed five lap cars between himself and second place finisher Spencer Bayston. Zach Daum took third running his backup car after losing the engine on the cool down lap headed to victory lane at Lincoln Speedway the night before. Carson Macedo took fourth, while Justin Peck rounded out the top five.

“It’s pretty awesome,” stated Tanner Thorson. “It’s even better to win in front of my family. They came out from Nevada and California to come watch me tonight and tomorrow for the ARCA race. It’s pretty cool. I like coming to this place. I haven’t had too much luck here, but I think I might have changed it around a bit. It’s awesome to be able to park it for Bryan Clauson.”

“I’d like to win, but Tanner got by me there while I was running the bottom,” said Spencer Bayston. “He got a good run and kind of got away from me there when we got into lap traffic. Hat’s off to him tonight and hats off to my guys.”

“We won a race here last year on a real little left rear tire and kind of thought that it would be that way tonight and we were just too loose,” explained Zach Daum. “I let the shocks go and it was better there at the end, but we didn’t hit it right tonight. We hit it about right last night; we just didn’t hit it tonight.”
