Macon, IL – Doubling down and sweeping the entire weekend, Nathan Benson took career victory number 21 with the POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series at Macon Speedway for the 1st Annual Rich Camfield Memorial. Benson’s 21st career win was his sixth of 2016.
In an action packed 20 lap feature event, Benson started in the fourth position and fell back to sixth on the opening lap. With multiple yellows to bunch the field back up, Benson had rallied back to third just before the halfway point. As Slater Helt commanded the top position and Andy Bishop in second, Bishop and Benson were able to sneak past Helt on lap 14. As Bishop appeared to be running away, Benson caught a lucky break as the caution flew on lap 17.
Returning to racing, Benson took the one opportunity he had on the restart and was able to squeak past Bishop heading into turn one , taking the position exiting the corner. For the remaining three laps, Benson distanced himself from Bishop to take the win. Slater Helt finished third with Jeremy Camp in fourth. Garrett Duff took fifth after starting 20th.
“Andy drove a good race,” stated Nathan Benson. “Me and him got bottled up on the start and fell backwards. I think he missed a shift or loaded up or something. We had to work for that one. Hooked up race track tonight and hats off to all the guys that worked hard after the rain. Good weekend; 300 miles back home, but it’s a little easier with two trophies in the truck.”
“Little bit of mechanical issues, I couldn’t get the car to take off like I wanted to,” explained Andy Bishop. “But I can’t thank all our sponsors enough.”
“I wish we could have got the win tonight,” said Slater Helt. “I think I’ve said that a couple times this year, but I’ve got to thank my dad and my crew chief and Nathan Benson. Good equipment we’ve got underneath us.”
