Macon, IL– Patrick Bruns of Champaign, Illinois battled his way to the front from seventh to lead the final four laps for the POWRi Lucas Oil ILLINI D II Midget Series victory. Andy Baugh would lead the opening lap, but Mitchell Davis would work past Baugh to lead lap two. By lap three, Chett Gehrke would move past both Davis and Baugh for the lead. On lap five, Tyler Vantoll would move into the second position, trying to set Gehrke up.
Enduring multiple cautions, Vantoll would eventually be in position to make a move on Gehrke, and after a slide job, Gehrke would try to return in the opposite corner, but end up backwards exiting four. Returning to racing, Bruns, now in the second spot, would power past Vantoll for the final four laps. Adam Taylor finished third, while Andy Malpocker took fourth. Hunter Lane rounded out the top five.
“It was fun racing here tonight,” explained Patrick Bruns. “It was fun racing with Tyler. I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer with him. SPEED Week isn’t over, until it’s over. It’s been a long week, but my guys work their butt off. I know they’re exhausted, but it’s a pure thrill right now. We’ve got one more night of this, so hopefully we can come out on top.”
“I saw him coming over and I let off,” said Tyler Vantoll. “As soon as I did, the car biked. It’s my fault. You can’t make mistakes out here with guys like him. That red really hurt us. But, overall not a bad week.”
“I’m not used to running the top like that,” stated Adam Taylor. “This is only my 15th dirt race ever. This is a blast, I love these cars.”
